Artist Statement

My love and appreciation for nature has always gone hand in hand with my desire to create art.  Art that celebrates nature's beauty. Allowing me to express in my own way, how humbled and grateful I am to witness nature's daily offerings.

With paper as my medium, I endeavor to realistically capture nature. Inviting viewers to feel as though they've joined me in that moment. It is my hope to inspire those who view my work to slow their pace, taking time in this busy world to be reminded of the sheer joy nature offers. And, to encourage a desire in each of us to learn more about how we can protect and preserve nature's effortless beauty.

Biographical Sketch

From a young age two of Barb's greatest passions have been her love for nature's abundant beauty and the desire to capture that through her art. She is a native of central Florida and spent many of her summers with her grandmother in the mountains of North Carolina. Both of her grandmother's and her father were avid gardeners and lovers of the outdoors. Each of them instilling in her not only the love of nature and gardening but also encouraging her artistic talent.

After attending college, she followed a fifteen-year career in corporate human resources and recruiting.  During that time, she pursued continuing education in graphic arts.  Eventually this led her to a position as a graphic artist for a television production company that specialized in how-to programming for public television stations.  Ten years later she chose to pursue her own art on a full-time basis.

Initially Barb returned to painting landscapes using either acrylics or oils. She quickly discovered that she wanted a different challenge. Still interested in painting landscapes she started experimenting with paper. The art of collage has always been of interest to her so she began working with natural, hand-made papers. Her goal was to capture with small, torn and cut papers the same intricate details of nature that she could achieve with paint. Utilizing paper as her medium she spends 3-9 months on a single work endeavoring to capture the detail, texture and depth that gives each piece a 3-dimensional quality.

Barb has had the opportunity to live in various parts of the country from Portland, Oregon to Savannah, Georgia.  Today she resides in her beloved mountains of western North Carolina.  Inspired by the stunning Blue Ridge mountains, surrounding forests and waterfalls, as well as locales from her travels and years growing up in Florida, she has been creating paper landscapes for the past eighteen years.
